Preserving a timeless legacy

Stories etched in stone

For over two centuries, Gibbons UMC Cemetery has been a silent witness to history, especially within the Brandywine region. This area, once heavily reliant on tobacco farming, was home to one of Maryland's most densely populated slaveholding communities. Among those laid to rest here we must not forget the many unrecorded and recorded enslaved African American individuals that are buried on Dyson Road in Brandywine, whose stories contribute to the rich tapestry of our past. Their presence reminds us of a vital, though often painful, chapter in our shared heritage.
